HBU Falls to Sixth-Ranked Duke

Newcomers Texada, Griciunaite and Maxey lead Huskies

HOUSTON – The HBU women’s basketball team began the 2009-10 season with a 104-35 loss to #6 Duke in front of a raucous sell-out crowd Friday night in Sharp Gym.

The Huskies led the Blue Devils on three separate occasions early in the first half, but after a Duke 10-8 lead, the Blue Devils increased the front-court press, something the Huskies couldn’t recover from.

HBU found itself down 41-14 at half, but Duke began the second half on a 22-2 run and never looked back.

The Huskies were led in scoring by freshman Destini Texada and junior Ernesta Griciunaite with six points apiece. Another freshman, Brittany Maxey, was second on the team with five points, while tops with six rebounds.

Duke’s Bridgette Mitchell led all scorers with 18 points, while Krystal Thomas earned a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

HBU (0-1) will hit the road for a 1 pm Sunday matchup at TCU.
