FARMVILLE, Va. – A penalty kick with eight minutes left in regulation to Longwood’s Martin Vickerton proved to be the game winner as the Lancers prevailed, 3-2, over the Huskies to advance to their second straight Atlantic Soccer Conference championship match.

The two teams entered the half with Longwood up 2-0, outshooting the Huskies 11-1 in the process. The two Lancer goals came eight minutes apart as Shane Johnson scored in the 36th minute off a header in the middle of the box, then Vickerton scored his first goal in the match with just under a minute left in the first half with a shot in the lower left corner of the goal.

HBU answered back with two goals of its own in the second half. Junior Joelle Daniel, who was named ASC First Team All-Conference less than 24 hours ago, cut the deficit to one, as the keeper blocked the shot, but still found a way into the back of the net. In the 69th minute, the Lancers put the goal in its own net, resulting in a 2-2 tie with 20 minutes left in regulation until Vickerston’s heroics.

Longwood outshot HBU 19-6 in the match, while the Huskies held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Michael Bouchahine set a career high with nine saves as Longwood’s Joel Helmick made two.

The Huskies conclude the season at 6-11-0. Longwood will face the #1 seeded Adelphi Panthers in a rematch of last season’s title game, set for a 11 am CST start on Sunday.
