HOUSTON – Sophomore Raquel Jones made sure her presence was known in her first action of the season as she tied an HBU record and set two career marks of her own to help lead the Huskies to a 101-99 double-overtime thriller over visiting Huston-Tillotson Wednesday evening.

Jones hit eight three-pointers, tying the mark set by Cari Schaff versus Langston in 2003-04. She also set new career marks in three pointers made and total points (28).

The Huskies entered halftime up three points, 43-40, as they shot 43 percent from the floor, while the Rams shot 45 percent. Freshman Brittany Maxey scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half on five-of-seven shooting, while HTU’s Kevetta Williams had 13 points as she shot 50 percent from the floor.

Ashley Bell sent the game into the first overtime as she made a layup with 18 seconds left. In the second half, the Huskies shot 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Rams forced a second overtime as Brittney Jones shot a game-tying three in the corner as time expired.

Two players shone for the Huskies in the overtime sessions in Simone Greenleaf and Dominique Mayberry. Mayberry scored all six of her points in the extra frames, while Greenleaf had seven of her 11 total rebounds in that time, including four offensive. The 11 rebounds are a new career high for her.

HBU was led in scoring by Jones with 28 points, while Maxey (18) and freshman Joselyn Pugh (12) were the only Huskies in double-digits. Greenleaf’s 11 rebounds were tops on the team, followed closely by sophomore Jamie Spriggs (10) and Maxey (9). Maxey only had one rebound entering halftime and she was one rebound and one steal away from a triple-double as she set career marks in her young collegiate career.

Huston-Tillotson was led in scoring by Williams with 34 points, while both Bell and Shaneka Mason had 21 apiece.

As a team, the Huskies 41 percent from the floor, 38 percent from the three-point line and 58 percent from the charity stripe. The Rams shot 46 percent, 39 percent and 71 percent, respectively.

HBU (1-2) will continue the homestand by welcoming Oregon State to Sharp Gym on Sunday, set for a 2:05 pm tip. The Beavers play at Houston on Thursday.
