HOUSTON – The HBU women’s basketball team shot just 29 percent from the floor as the Cowgirls of McNeese State left Houston with a 63-41 win over the Huskies Tuesday night in Sharp Gym.

MSU led at half 38-11 as the Cowgirls shot 52 percent from the floor versus the Huskies’ 17 percent. Sophomore Dominique Mayberry scored all five of her points in the first half and was the leading scorer for HBU heading into the break. MSU’s Kiara Johnson – fresh off a career-high 20 points in a loss against Samford – scored 12 points in the opening half. Shirolacille Holloway was the top rebounder for the Huskies, grabbing three in the opening 20 minutes, while both Kendra Wells and Lauren Nutter had four each.

In the second half, the Huskies forced more turnovers (16) and shot better (41 percent) but could get no closer than 20 the rest of the way.

HBU was led in scoring by sophomore Raquel Jones with eight points. Destini Texada was second with seven, with all of her points coming in the second half. Mele Leasau led the Huskies with five rebounds, while Brittany Maxey and Simone Greenleaf had four apiece. Johnson led the Cowgirls with 25 points and was tied with Nutter with seven rebounds. Brooke Froeba had eight assists.

HBU (1-4) will host Tennessee-Martin Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. The Skyhawks fell at Lamar 84-54 Tuesday night.
