CONWAY, Ark. – The HBU women’s basketball team started the 2010 portion of the schedule with a 106-66 loss against Central Arkansas Tuesday night at the Farris Center. The Huskies came out firing entering the first media timeout, shooting 50 percent from the floor and leading the Sugar Bears, 13-10. Destini Texada led all scorers at that moment with seven points, while UCA’s Nakeia Guiden was tops with six points, all coming on free throws. The Huskies got a little sloppy entering the midway point of the first half, as a Taniqua Hollis three-pointer cut the deficit to 21-18. UCA kept a close eye on Texada the rest of the half, shutting her down after the first media timeout, as the Sugar Bears led 49-32 at the break. HBU was led in scoring by Shirolacille Holloway with eight points, followed by Texada and Hollis with seven apiece. Texada also had four assists and two steals. Brittany Maxey was tops on the glass, grabbing six rebounds, four offensive. Central Arkansas was led by their leading scorer, Megan Herbert, with 17 points, followed by Desiree Rogers with 10. Rogers also led the Sugar Bears with six rebounds, followed by Marci Moffitt’s five. Britney Gowans had one assist, five blocks and two steals. UCA started the second half on a 10-0 run which was ended by a free throw by Texada, then a rebound off the second free throw and ensuing layup by Maxey. The two teams entered the first media timeout of the second half with UCA leading, 64-37. The Sugar Bears continued their hot shooting and never looked back the rest of the game. The Huskies were led in scoring by Maxey, who recorded her second double-double on the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Hollis was second with nine points, while Holloway, Texada and Mele Leasau ended up with eight points apiece. Texada also led the team with four assists and was tied for the team lead with two blocks and two steals. UCA’s Herbert and Rogers scored 51 of the Sugar Bears’ 106 points, as Herbert scored 31 and Rogers added 20. Gowans (16), Guiden (12) and Westin Taylor (10) were the other players in double-figures. Herbert and Rogers also had double-doubles as they finished with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively. HBU (2-13) will commence Great West Conference play by hosting Chicago State on Thursday, January 14, set for a 5:35 pm start.
