HBU Hosts Chicago State in GWC Action Thursday

Start of four-game homestand for the Huskies

HOUSTON – The road to a Great West Conference championship begins Thursday night in Sharp Gym as the HBU Huskies host the Chicago State Cougars at 5:35 pm.

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

HBU (2-13, 0-0 GWC) began the 2009 portion of the season with a 106-66 loss at Central Arkansas on January 5.

The Huskies shot 50 percent in the opening four minutes, but UCA caught fire itself as the Sugar Bears shot 54 percent from the floor in the game. UCA’s leading scorer entering the contest, Megan Herbert, scored a game-high 31 points with 12 rebounds. Brittany Maxey recorded her second double-double on the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Destini Texada had four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Texada leads HBU in points per game, averaging 9.5, while Taniqua Hollis is second with 9.0. Texada also leads the team with 5.4 rebounds a game, while Maxey is second with 5.3. Dominique Mayberry has a team-leading 37 assists with 13 steals.

Chicago State (6-11, 1-0 GWC) began Great West Conference play with a 77-53 victory at Utah Valley on January 9. Caila Desroches paced the Cougars with a season-high 15 points against the Wolverines.

CSU is led by the Waldon sisters, as Courtney averages 13.4 points per game and Alyssa scores 11.9. Leading the team on the glass is C. Waldon, who averages 5.1 rebounds a contest and she also leads the team with 11 blocks. A. Waldon is tops on the team with 53 assists and 42 steals.

HBU and CSU have played one common opponent in Central Arkansas: the Cougars snapped the Sugar Bears’ eight-game winning streak with a 78-62 win in Chicago.
