Huskies Battle NJIT Saturday

HBU looking for first conference victory

HOUSTON – The HBU women’s basketball team will look for its first Great West Conference win when the Huskies host NJIT Saturday at 5:35 pm.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

HBU (2-14 overall, 0-1 GWC) opened conference play with a 71-57 loss to visiting Chicago State Thursday.

The Huskies found themselves down as many as 25 points midway through the second half, but battled back to as close as 12 points on two separate occasions, but could not get any closer.

Brittany Barton set a career-high with 10 points and three 3-pointers made, while Taniqua Hollis also added 10 points. Destini Texada finished one point short of a double-double as she had nine points and a team-high 12 rebounds. CSU’s Natalie Marlowe finished with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Texada leads the team with 9.4 points per game, followed by Hollis’ 9.1. Texada also is tops on the team with 5.9 rebounds a game and Brittany Maxey has a team-high 26 steals.

NJIT (5-11 overall, 0-1 GWC) commenced GWC play with a 62-54 loss at UT-Pan American Thursday.

Ivana Seric led the Highlanders with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while Taiwo Oyelola added 12 points and six boards. Seric also added four assists, one steal and one block. UTPA’s Maria Erlingsdottir and Aleeya Grigsby scored game-high 16 points. Grigsby finished two rebounds shy of a double-double. Marah Guzman recorded four assists and seven steals.

NJIT is led in scoring by Jessica Gerald with 14.6 points per game, while T. Oyelola is second with 9.7. Seric leads the team with 6.2 rebounds a game, while T. Oyelola is second with 6.1. Seric has nearly a third of the team’s 30 blocks (9).
