ARLINGTON, Texas – In a game with 10 lead changes, a late run by UT-Arlington pushed the Mavericks past the HBU Huskies on Monday evening at Texas Hall by a score of 84-73.

Senior Mario Flaherty posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the first half before finishing with 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds.  He finished the game 4-4 from the field and 9-18 at the foul line.  Flaherty also had two blocked shots and one assist.

Andrew Gonzalez, a junior, led the Huskies with 25 points on 9-14 shooting.  He also had five rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot.  Wendell Preadom was the third Husky reaching double-digits in scoring, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Huskies got their first lead of the game more than five minutes in the game on a Gonzalez three-pointer that made the score 12-10.  HBU built its lead to four shortly after but the Mavericks answered with a 10-2 run to go ahead 22-18.  The largest lead of the half was five for UTA which led 38-33 but the Huskies got a pair of baskets from Gonzalez in the final 1:09 to cut it to 38-37 at the half

The second half went back and forth with HBU taking its largest lead of the half at the 10:41 mark thanks to a Preadom layup, making it 54-50 in the Huskies’ favor.  With 2:07 left, the Huskies were trailing 73-70 but over the final two minutes the Mavericks went on an 11-3 run to close it out.

HBU shot 48 percent (24-50) from the floor but that wasn’t enough to overcome a season-high 29 turnovers.  The Huskies were 3-11 from three-point range (27.3 percent) and 22-35 (62.9 percent) at the foul line.  The Mavericks finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (29-68) and 44.4 percent (8-18) from three.

Marquez Haynes led UTA with 32 points and nine assists while Brandon Long connected on 6-8 from three and finished with 25 points.

The Huskies drop to 3-15 on the season while UTA evens its record at 9-9.
