HOUSTON, Texas – Steve Moniaci has been named Athletic Director at Houston Baptist University after serving as interim AD since May 2009.

“Steve has provided invaluable leadership as HBU has moved toward full membership in NCAA Division I athletics,” said HBU President Robert B. Sloan, Jr.  “The role of Athletic Director is critical to the University, and Steve’s talents provide a great asset to our entire program.”

Moniaci has played an integral role in HBU’s transition back to NCAA Division I status and joining the Great West Conference.  He has overseen the day-to-day operations of the athletic department since May 2009 as the interim AD.  Moniaci served as associate athletic director at HBU from 2007 to May 2009.

Moniaci joined HBU after 26 years of service in the athletic department at Rice University.  He began his tenure at Rice as the executive director of the Owl Club and director of athletic promotions.  He was named assistant athletic director in charge of operations in 1985 and associate athletic director in 1997.  In 2001, he was named senior associate athletic director, a position he held until 2006.

“I want to thank Dr. Sloan for giving me this opportunity and for the faith that he personally has shown in me.  While it is always great to be associated with a wonderful institution such as HBU, this is a particularly momentous time in the history of the University, and I have been and will continue to be excited to be a part of it.  With the help of everyone on our campus, we will continue to move ahead with our goal of re-establishing HBU athletics as a leader within the NCAA at the Division l level,” said Moniaci.

Moniaci and his wife, Cathy, have two daughters, Alyssa (20) and Andrea (16).
