HOUSTON - Head basketball coach Ron Cottrell has announced the signing of a pair of players to National Letters of Intent to join the HBU basketball program for the 2010-11 academic year.

“We are very excited to be adding these two young men to our program.  They are terrific young men and as we continue our transition to NCAA Division I, I believe they will help us continue to improve our program and achieve our goals of a conference championship and post-season play,” said Cottrell.

Sam Ryan hails from College Park High School in The Woodlands where the 6-10 post player competed for head coach Clifton McNeely.  Ryan helped the Cavaliers reach the second round of the state playoffs and finish with a 23-14 overall record.  He averaged 4.4 rebounds, 3.2 points and 1.3 blocked shots per game as a senior.

“The biggest thing with Sam is adding size at the post position with a local young man,” Cottrell stated.  “He comes from a very good local high school basketball program and he comes from a wonderful family.  I’m excited to have him join our program and I am looking forward to his growth and development as a player at HBU.”

Samuel Obetoh, a 6-7 wing from Brooklyn, N.Y., will transfer from Kaskaskia College where he played for head coach Brian Hancock.  Obetoh was third on the team in scoring with 11.6 points per game as a sophomore while also pulling down 3.4 rebounds per game and averaging 1.1 assists and one blocked shot.  Kaskaskia went 17-14 during the 2009-10 season.

“Sammy is a very athletic, long wing player who can really score, both from the perimeter and through his ability to penetrate off the dribble.  He gives us some much needed size on the wing and can play multiple positions.  We expect him to come in and make major contributions to our program over the next two years,” added Cottrell.
