DALLAS – Kofi Gwayu scored in the 87th minute to help UAB dismiss HBU, 1-0, on the final day of the SMU Classic Sunday morning.

The Blazers (6-2-1) came into the Classic ranked third in the Midwest Region and battled host SMU to a 1-1 stalemate two days earlier.

Gwayu scored on a cross pass set up by Sibusiso Macwele and Two-Boys Gumede, beating Husky keeper Chris Dodd.

The Blazers outshot the Huskies 16-10 and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Kyle Oehring and Joelle Daniel each led the Huskies with two shots apiece, while Oehring had one shot on goal.

Michael Bouchahine started for the Huskies, allowing zero goals and no saves in 38 minutes, while Dodd suffered the loss in the remaining 52 minutes of action. UAB’s Carl Woszczynski played all 90 minutes, allowing zero goals and making two saves.

Duke Ogega and Daniel were named to the All-Tournament Team.

HBU (4-5-0) will play its home opener Friday evening against San Jose State at 7:30 pm as part of the HBU Tournament. Friday’s first match features Air Force vs. Howard at 5 pm.
