HBU Volleyball Falls to Utah Valley

HOUSTON – Houston Baptist freshman outide hitter Heather Leaverton notched her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 11 digs as the Huskies’ rally fell short in a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20) loss to Utah Valley in Great West Conference volleyball Thursday at Sharp Gym.


Junior outside hitter Paige Jenkins added eight kills and 12 digs for the Huskies (11-18, 3-8 GWC), while senior right side hitter Ligia Clemente had seven kills and sophomore middle blocker Jolie Graf had seven kills, six blocks and four service aces. Sophomore libero Courtney Whittleman led HBU defensively with 19 digs. Senior setter Natalie Magat paced the offense with three kills, five digs and 32 assists.

Kayli Broadbent led Utah Valley (18-9, 8-2) with a match-high 15 kills, while Chelsey Garfield had nine kills and 11 digs. Allyce Jones led the Wolverines with a match-high 21 digs, while Kathleen Stephens pitched in with 12. Chelsea Fa’alogo had seven kills, six digs, four blocks and 33 assists.

Utah Valley hit .198 for the match, while holding HBU to .072. The Wolverines outdug the Huskies, 60-55, and outblocked them, 11-10.

HBU will return to action in its last regular-season home match by hosting Prairie View A&M in a rescheduled match Monday at 7 p.m. at Sharp Gym. Monday is Senior Night, where Clemente, Magat and defensive specialists Samantha Wilson and Lize Hicks will be honored.
