NEWARK, N.J. – HBU fell behind 1-0 before a goal in the final four minutes from sophomore Kristina Burhans gave the Huskies a 2-1 win over South Carolina State in the opening round of the Great West Conference tournament held at Lubetkin Field on the campus of NJIT of Friday.

The Lady Bulldogs got on the board scored at the four minute mark when Husky goalkeeper Michelle Rich fumbled the ball and SCSU’s Dani Benton got control of the board and found the back of the net.  HBU managed just a pair of shots in the first half and went in to the half trailing by a goal.

In the second half, Brandi Hart sent a ball in to the box where Isla Cameron took the pass, dribbled past the keeper and tied the game at 1-1.  The score remained tied until the 87th minute.  Kristina Burhans took a punt from Rich and let it rip from 15 yards out, beating the keeper and giving the Huskies the 2-1 win.

The goal was the first of the season for Burhans and it was also Rich’s first assist.  Cameron’s goal was her team-leading eighth of the year.

The two teams were even with eight shots each and six shots on goal.  The Huskies held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Rich made five saves to earn the win.

HBU improves to 8-8-3 on the season and advances to the semifinals of the Great West tournament.  The Huskies will face North Dakota on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
