HBU SHUT OUT BY BOBCATS

Gaines goes seven in loss

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The HBU Huskies played a tight game with Texas State but fell 4-0 on Monday night at Bobcat Field.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Texas State pushed across a pair of runs thanks to a pair of one-out walks and two singles to take a 2-0 lead.  With men on first and third, HBU starter Tristan Gaines induced his second 6-4-3 double play of the game to end the inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Gaines got in to trouble, walking the first two batters and then they moved up on a sacrifice bunt.  Gaines got a ground out back to the pitcher before loading the bases with a walk with two outs.  He then got a fly out to left to end the threat and keep the Huskies down by just two.

The Bobcats got back-to-back singles in the seventh and a sacrifice fly with one out to score another run and make the score 3-0.  The Huskies gave away a run in the eighth inning, committing a pair of errors on bad throws.

Gaines went seven innings for his longest outing of the year, giving up just three earned runs and six hits.  The junior was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 1-5.  He struck out four but issued seven walks in the game.

HBU (6-25) managed just four hits off the Texas State pitchers and stranded eight baserunners.  Texas State (24-10) finished with seven hits and left 10 men on base.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Texas Southern across town at MacGregor Park beginning at 1:00 pm.
